Home clothes dryers used to be located exclusively in the basement.  Many homes now have dryers in bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and hall closets. Dryers are vented longer distances with more bends and turns.  Systems are "fitted" to the space and configuration available.

Modern dryers produce large quantities of highly combustible lint. Do not assume lint traps catch all the lint, even if you clean them after each load.  Lint gets past them and accumulates on the heating element and other areas inside the dryer.  Fires start from a spark in the machine. Proper dryer venting and cleaning plays an essential part in your family’s fire safety.  It also protects you from the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning from improper venting.

State and local municipalities and most manufacturers specify metal dryer exhaust chutes.  Metal prevents the vent from crushing or folding upon itself.  That is common if you locate the dryer too close to a wall or push it back too far. A crushed pipe may activate the dryer’s high temperature limit safety switch. That may save you.  But, most high temperature limit safety switches are not designed to cycle on and off, so they fail.  A professional yearly cleaning tremendously reduces your risk of a tragedy.

MAKE CERTAIN YOU:

1. NEVER RUN YOUR DRYER WHILE YOU ARE OUT OF THE HOUSE OR WHEN YOU ARE ASLEEP.

2.  Read the manufacturers' safety instructions thoroughly.
